2006 Visionary Awards

The final five 2006 Symantec Visionaries were named at the Symantec Vision event in Shanghai on October 31, 2006. A total of 27 Symantec Visionaries were recognized in 2006 at a total of six Vision events, including eight Visionaries at the Global Vision event in San Francisco, California on May 5. The various recipients spam the globe and encompass numerous industries and solutions.

Award winners include Gary Clark, the Chief Technology Officer for DHL; Michael McGibbney, Director of Technology Infrastructure at American Express; Laura Fucci, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at MGM MIRAGE; Eun Sik Kim, Chief Information Officer at Shinhan Bank; and Yves Baguet, Director of Technology at Clearstream International; and Myra Galbreath, the Acting Chief Technology Officer at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

At the Shanghai Vision event, the five Visionary teams were recognized by Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific and Japan Bill Robbins and Vice President of Sales for Greater China Chuen Wah Bernard Kwok: the IT team from Fubon Financial Holding Company, the IT team from HiNet Internet Service from Chunghwa; the IT team for the Housing Authority of Hong Kong; the Operations Management Center team from Huawei Technologies Company; and the IT team for Shanghai Municipal Power Company.

More than 100 nominations worldwide were submitted by the Symantec sales and services organizations in 2006. The nominations for the Greater China region were evaluated based on technology innovation, business value impact, and involvement of Symantec partners and services.

IT Team, Fubon Financial Holding Company, Ltd.

Banking and Investing on “Firsts ”

Achieving a history of “firsts”, including the first holding company listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, the largest bank in Taiwan, and the first listed company with an independent director system, requires an IT organization that continually exercises thought leadership. The IT strategy at Fubon Financial Holding Company revolves around protecting information, infrastructure, and interactions. Following the consolidation of various companies in 2001, the IT team, led by Executive Vice President of IT Operations Thomas Liang, embarked on a series of standardization initiatives ranging from comprehensive threat management to data center availability to IT compliance. The initiatives leverage different software components from Symantec. The breadth of the initiatives is quite impressive, and Fubon Financial is banking on the results-which fall into several different areas. Key results include a 20 percent reduction in the total cost of data center ownership, enterprise messaging management for 18,000 employees and spam reduction from 80 percent to 3 percent, and a significant reduction in the amount of time spent tracking IT compliance-related issues.
 

IT Team, HiNet Internet Services from Chunghwa Telecom

Protecting Millions of Consumers and Businesses

Serving millions of customers and holding the rank of the seventh largest Internet Service Provider in the world bring some very demanding technology challenges. Add a customer base that has more than doubled in the past five years and an IT infrastructure that has kept pace in terms of size and complexity and HiNet Internet Services from Chunghwa Telecom has double the challenges. The IT team at HiNet, led by IT Director I-Fang Wu, maintains comprehensive threat management for individual consumers and small and medium-size businesses using various Symantec technologies. For enterprise messaging management, the team uses several different Symantec software components. And for data protection, the ISP leverages Veritas NetBackup. The various solutions are driving tangible business value for HiNet in several areas. First, the information and interactions of more than 30,000 small and medium-size businesses and over 3 million consumers are protected. Second, the productivity of more than three million high-speed Internet subscribers was improved through a more than 50 percent reduction in spam. Finally, leveraging its investment in Symantec technologies, HiNet developed and launched a security monitoring service. Its clients include the largest financial institution in the country-the ChungHwa Post.
 

IT Team, Hospital Authority of Hong Kong

Prescribing a Proactive Information Security Solution

Information security for the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong, which consists of 160 hospitals and clinics and a staff of 52,000 who attend to more than 14 million inpatient and outpatient visits each year, is a top priority. When the Hospital Authority's network was breached by the Sasser worm in 2004, the IT team, led by CIO Andrew Greyling, determined that an early warning solution was needed. After several months of testing, the IT team deployed Symantec DeepSight Threat Management System in 2005. The DeepSight Threat Management System provides the Hospital Authority with a proactive means for covering the complete threat lifecycle-from initial vulnerability to active attack. Since deploying DeepSight Threat Management System, the Hospital Authority has not experienced any network disruption from security incidents, and the results extend to operational efficiencies as well, including a 50 percent reduction in the time spent evaluating threats and hundreds of hours of preventive action. And overall, the Hospital Authority achieved 100 percent return on its investment with the avoidance of the first security incident.
 

Operations Management Center Team, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

Delivering Network Services to One Billion End Users

Developing, building, and delivering telecommunication network solutions and services that create maximum value for more than one billion customers worldwide is at the heart of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.'s business. The Operations Management Center team, led by Product Line Manager Yi Yong You is recognized for its strategic, innovative use of Symantec storage management and availability software tools. Numerous telecommunications companies around the world, including China Mobile, Columbia Movil, Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited, and CANTV, leverage the Operations Management Center product line from Huawei Technologies to manage their networks that deliver service to more than one billion end users. Seeking to increase the functionality while improving the stability of the Operations Management Center product line, the team integrated Veritas Volume Replicator, Veritas Storage Foundation, and Veritas Cluster Server with Global Cluster Option. The Operations Management Center product line now delivers robust disaster recovery capabilities through high availability clustering, file system and volume management, and data replication.
 

IT Team, Shanghai Municipal Power Company, Ltd.

Generating Business Value with Data Center Software Standardization

Highly robust, flexible IT systems area requirement for one of the largest enterprises in the People's Republic of China with responsibility for power distribution and services to more than 13 million citizens. The IT team for Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company, led by CIO Yue Zhong Tang, sought to lower its data center total cost of ownership while improving quality of service for applications used for ERP, billing, customer service, and other business-critical functions. With a data center infrastructure that encompasses IBM AIX and EMC storage systems, the IT team needed a software infrastructure with robust heterogeneous support. Working with Symantec Partner Shanghai Time Technology Co., Ltd., the IT team turned to Symantec Data Center Foundation tools for centralized server and storage management. The data center software standardization initiative enabled Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company to improve storage utilization, which equates to several hundred thousand U.S. dollars in cost avoidance annually. In addition, through high availability clustering, the IT team was able to improve application availability to 99.995 percent, which translates into improved quality of service for its customers.
